During my research process, it was important that I looked heavily into my chosen genre to get a good idea of the conventions and styles used by the different artists, including my chosen artist Rizzle Kicks.
The main themes/messages that I wanted to represent were firstly, a fun and light-hearted feel as that is the common style used by Rizzle Kicks and secondly, to have quite a literal interpretation of the lyrics and name of ‘When I Was a Youngster’ using a childish props and settings.
I then thought about features of mise en scene such as a casual costume and bright natural light which would help to represent my artist’s style successfully.
I wanted to use a range of different props and costumes to help me show the more literal interpretation of the lyrics and this would therefore make the video more aesthetically pleasing to the viewers because they can make the connection between what they are hearing and then what they see to match it.
I didn't have a narrative in my video as such but what I did have was the concept of what it was like to be a child again and the type of things you would get up to. I used settings such as the park and also use of the trampoline to give the video a childish feel. I also got my performers to act as if they were children again which created a fun and entertaining effect because they are grown up but playing in a park etc.
Quite a few of Rizzle Kicks’ videos have a low budget handheld kind of feel to them and so I thought this would be a good look for my video as it allowed me to include a range of different movements that helped keep it more attractive rather than stiff shots that may be boring to watch.
I have been very consistent across my video and ancillary tasks. I used the same font style for both my digipak and my magazine advert, one that is similar to the actual Rizzle Kicks font used, and I also used the same costumes for both the video footage and the ancillary images I captured. This consistency means that my ancillaries clearly match my video and therefore people will be able to see the links between them and they will look more professional and effective. It also means that by using a similar font to the actual artists branding, people will easily be able to associate my style to the artist. Another thing that I kept consistent between the video and ancillaries was the stylistic approach, for example the same natural lighting was used, the same kind of shot types like the common two shot showing both performers and also I feel that all three of my pieces promote the same fun and light-hearted idea that is often used by Rizzle Kicks. I think that getting this theme across clearly was one of the most important things and so by being consistent across the 3, the viewers will be able to recognize it. Using the fun theme across all three pieces represents the artists in a way that people would expect from them and it means that viewers can identify with them because it can apeal to anyone. Also when you think about the song in particular, everyone can reminisce about what they got up to during their childhood and enjoy the moment.
