Evaluation Question 3 - What Have You Learned From Audience Feedback?
My target audience was mainly a male market aged around 15-21.
They are typically fun and outgoing people that see friends,
play sports and enjoy light hearted music from the pop and hip hop genres
including other artists such as Ed Sheeran and Wretch 32.
When I chose Rizzle Kicks as my artist, I spoke to people about
what they would expect from a music video and in particular, for the song When
I Was A Youngster. They said that they would expect to see a fun light-hearted
video with a childish theme to link to the song name and lyrics. I collected
this information by creating a mind map asking people what they did when they
were young.
I filmed shots such as two shots, mid shots and also
camera movements such as a track to make my video look
conventional. I included a specific shot of the two performers on a
trampoline to get the childish theme across which my audience liked
(screening feedback sheets). I had a lot of feedback from my initial screening
which included the need of better lighting, even more variety of shots and more
of the childish theme such as the trampoline to make it really obvious how it
links to the song. Also during filming, me and my performers were always
discussing what shots would look good and then try them out. Overall from my feedback
sheets I found that I needed to keep using costumes, settings and movements to
show the childish theme.
If I was to film my music video again I would try to use
costumes like the builder a lot more throughout to keep the theme evident and
also use some more locations to add variety to the shots. I would even
consider doing a different genre entirely such as alternative hip hop and
in particular the artist The Weeknd. This is because from working with other
groups to film their video I very much enjoyed the artistic shots using colour
and different effects rather than my more natural lit low budget feel. I
thought that it would be an interesting genre to really show the abstract and
creative themes/styles through a range of shots, settings and colours.
Something that I also got told (which I forgot to add in the video) via feedback was to use less of the plain backdrop two shots but I felt that the way I used it as my main shot to always cut back to was conventional to the artists style and so I therefore kept it in.
Overall, gaining audience feedback over the process has been very important as it allowed me to see what people expected from my work and certain ideas that they thought were good and also the things that I needed to change or improve on. This all really helped me to create a successful final video that included all the kinds of things that the viewers were expecting from me.

Evaluation Question 2 - Combination of Ancillary and Video
During my research process, it was important that I looked heavily into my chosen genre to get a good idea of the conventions and styles used by the different artists, including my chosen artist Rizzle Kicks.
The main themes/messages that I wanted to represent were firstly, a fun and light-hearted feel as that is the common style used by Rizzle Kicks and secondly, to have quite a literal interpretation of the lyrics and name of ‘When I Was a Youngster’ using a childish props and settings.
I then thought about features of mise en scene such as a casual costume and bright natural light which would help to represent my artist’s style successfully.
I wanted to use a range of different props and costumes to help me show the more literal interpretation of the lyrics and this would therefore make the video more aesthetically pleasing to the viewers because they can make the connection between what they are hearing and then what they see to match it.
I didn't have a narrative in my video as such but what I did have was the concept of what it was like to be a child again and the type of things you would get up to. I used settings such as the park and also use of the trampoline to give the video a childish feel. I also got my performers to act as if they were children again which created a fun and entertaining effect because they are grown up but playing in a park etc.
Quite a few of Rizzle Kicks’ videos have a low budget handheld kind of feel to them and so I thought this would be a good look for my video as it allowed me to include a range of different movements that helped keep it more attractive rather than stiff shots that may be boring to watch.
I have been very consistent across my video and ancillary tasks. I used the same font style for both my digipak and my magazine advert, one that is similar to the actual Rizzle Kicks font used, and I also used the same costumes for both the video footage and the ancillary images I captured. This consistency means that my ancillaries clearly match my video and therefore people will be able to see the links between them and they will look more professional and effective. It also means that by using a similar font to the actual artists branding, people will easily be able to associate my style to the artist. Another thing that I kept consistent between the video and ancillaries was the stylistic approach, for example the same natural lighting was used, the same kind of shot types like the common two shot showing both performers and also I feel that all three of my pieces promote the same fun and light-hearted idea that is often used by Rizzle Kicks. I think that getting this theme across clearly was one of the most important things and so by being consistent across the 3, the viewers will be able to recognize it. Using the fun theme across all three pieces represents the artists in a way that people would expect from them and it means that viewers can identify with them because it can apeal to anyone. Also when you think about the song in particular, everyone can reminisce about what they got up to during their childhood and enjoy the moment.

Evaluation Question 1 - How do your ancillary tasks and video use, challenge and develop conventions?
Music Video...
I produced a music video for the Rizzle Kicks song 'When I Was A Youngster'. When I was researching i found that two shots were most common and this convention was one I used in my music video. An example of a sped up shot is the 1st image in the blendspace below.
I also found another key convention from the actual 'When I Was A Youngster' video was the use of childish props/costumes to help get the theme across and I felt like this was a very important convention to use in my own music video and so used a mixture of costumes and props to show this.
Also the use of childish settings were used in the original video and so I used this convention to really show my theme of being young again to the viewers. An example of a sped up shot and childish setting are the 3rd image in the blendspace below.
When looking at the Rizzle Kicks video 'Mumma Do The Hump' I thought the low budget handheld kind of filming was a convention I could develop in my video and so when filming I tried to keep tripod usage to a minimum and because of this, the majority of my video has handheld movement and a more low budget feel. This therefore made it easier to make my video successful because people can see that the low budget feel was purposely done. An example of a sped up shot is the 5th image in the blendspace below.
Use of effects such as slow mo have been used my Rizzle Kicks and also other artists in my chosen genre and so I took this on board when filming my video. I thought slow mo would be very fitting to the part of the song where the pace drops and so I used this convention. I developed it in a way so that it was in time with the video and so it slowed down just at the right point but then sped up again just in time for the pick up of the pace again. An example of a sped up shot is the 7th image in the blendspace below.
When I was editing the slow motion part of my song, I had an idea of challenging the conventions by speeding certain shots up to match the increased pace of the song towards the end. This gave these shots a more comical feel and therefore helped get my childish fun theme across. An example of a sped up shot is the 9th image in the blendspace below.
Digipak...
When I was researching into digipaks from my chosen artist and also other artists within the genre, I found that a key convention was having a range of pictures of the artist on the cover and also inside and so I made sure that I used this convention by putting a range of images on my digipak cover and also on some of the inside sections.
My research into digipaks and videos allowed me to see the kinds of colour schemes/lighting used by my chosen artists and I found that in most of their videos they have very bright natural light and a similar theme with digipaks so I developed this idea by choosing to use a bright sky theme for my digipak because it shows the conventional bright light and also matches the fonts that I selected.
In both covers for Rizzle Kicks albums I noticed that they tend to use quite a neutral colour for their name and album name but I thought that bright colours would match the bright style of my digipak and so I therefore challenged the conventions and used red and blue. I feel like by using colourful fonts as well as the bright colours from the image, it created a kind of 'comic book' style which fits nicely with the artists style.
Advert...
When I looked into digipak adverts for my chosen artists and also other artists from my chosen genre I found that having a picture of the actual album cover on the advert was something that was used a lot and so I therefore chose to use this convention with my advert. This is effective because it means the target audience can clearly see the album that is being advertised and potentially being sold to them and it also shows the consistency in the fonts and shot types that I used.
On the Rizzle Kicks advert that I analysed, they used a square on two shot of them on a plain backdrop so I decided to take the conventional two shot but develop it so that firstly, they are not on a plain backdrop but instead sat in a tree/tree-house linking to their fun style, secondly by having one of them higher than the other instead of next to each other, and finally using a low angle shot to capture some of the bright sky.
Another convention that I noticed in the genre was the use of a short review and rating from a writer about the album or artist which I thought was a good convention to use in my own advert as it describes the album positively and so may make people more likely to buy the album if it was in fact in a magazine. I did not find use of this specifically from Rizzle Kicks so it is slightly challenging the conventions of the artist.
